Libet Do We Have Free Will ?

چکیده

I have taken an experimental approach to this question. Freely voluntary acts are preceded by a specific electrical change in the brain (the ‘readiness potential’, RP) that begins 550 ms before the act. Human subjects became aware of intention to act 350–400 ms after RP starts, but 200 ms. before the motor act. The volitional process is therefore initiated unconsciously. But the conscious function could still control the outcome; it can veto the act. Free will is therefore not excluded. These findings put constraints on views of how free will may operate; it would not initiate a voluntary act but it could control performance of the act. The findings also affect views of guilt and responsibility. But the deeper question still remains: Are freely voluntary acts subject to macrodeterministic laws or can they appear without such constraints, non-determined by natural laws and ‘truly free’? I shall present an experimentalist view about these fundamental philosophical opposites.

Benjamin Libet Can Conscious Experience Affect Brain Activity ?

Velmans appropriately refers to our experimental study (Libet et al., 1983) that found that onset of an electrically observable cerebral process (readiness potential, or RP) preceded the appearance of the subject’s awareness of the conscious wish to act, by at least 350 msec. That indicated that the volitional process is initiated unconsciously. Velmans uses the term preconscious instead of unc...

Draft, do not quote without permission. Fellowship and a project grant from ESRC. 2 Introduction Neuroscientific work on intentions and voluntary actions has tended to focus on very short time scales, immediately before movement onset. As a prime example, the intentions investigated by Benjamin Libet are states that are first consciously experienced on average 200ms before action onset. Libet's...

Anticipatory consciousness, Libet’s veto and a close-enough theory of free will

Benjamin Libet concluded that, given the constraints caused by the timing of consciousness, all action is generated unconsciously. The power of consciousness, according to Libet, is in selection, in having the ability to veto each action before it is run to completion. In this paper we challenge the veto, by proposing that the role of consciousness exists prior rather than after the initiation ...

Conscious Intention and Brain Activity

The problem of free will lies at the heart of modern scientific studies of consciousness. An influential series of experiments by Libet has suggested that conscious intentions arise as a result of brain activity. This contrasts with traditional concepts of free will, in which the mind controls the body. A more recent study by Haggard and Eimer has further examined the relation between intention...

Real latencies and facilitation.

Over the centuries, the mind–body problem has proved to be a hard nut to crack. Benjamin Libet’s laudable and extensive research indicates directions that might prove to be fruitful in this regard. His hypotheses, allegedly based on data derived from experimentation, if true, have immense implications for the mind–body problem, theories of consciousness, and the concept of free will. But these ...
